Keya Paha County

Located along the South Dakota border, this north central Nebraska county derived its name from the Lakota Sioux, with Keya Paha meaning "Turtle Buttes" after the numerous geographic formations in the northern part of the county.

Keya Paha County is to this day also called "Mob County" because of the numerous vigilante activities in the 1880-90s and into the 1900s. Many people were hanged and shot during this period of lawlessness. Over ten killings are documented with tales of many more, possibly over 20.

Meadville was in the heart of this activity with "Doc" Middleton being one of the most notorious horse thieves in the area. His hidden corral is located about six miles west of Meadville on the south side of the Niobrara River.

Meadville was abandoned in about 1960 after having lost its post office. The store and park were rebuilt and restored from 1993 to 1996. The rest of the town is currently being rebuilt with five new homes. The community's 110th celebration was held on July 4, 1996.

Presently, Meadville hosts its annual Fourth of July parade, free BBQ, dance, antique tractor pull and ball games. In addition, the scenic Meadville Park is used by campers, hikers, fishermen, hunters, bird watchers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Also in the area re the Bottomless Lake, the Ox Bow Bayou, the largest, fastest-moving fault line in Nebraska, and the antique bridge over the Niobrara.

Being the only town on the river, Meadville is "The Capitol of the Niobrara." Visit the old-time general store for fun, food, drinks and relaxation, and, of course, the local friendship and tales.
